Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is not just a valuable resource for resolving health problems in humans. It’s principles have also been used for maintaining health of animals.

Modern day veterinary medicine mainly targeted horses and livestock at first but then expanded its practice on small animals after the World War II. A similar pattern is also observed in China. Chinese medicine has a long history using herbs to treat animals with well documented medical achievements. The Classic of Ox and Horse, published in 1608 AD, is the most well-known treatise on horses and livestock in China. This book discusses management and medical knowledge of horses and oxen in a systemic manner, along with 112 illustrations and over 300 remedies. It wasn’t until 1873 AD, when health information about dogs and cats was found to be recorded. In a book named Huo Shou Ci Zhou, the author established special chapters for the remedies of dogs and cats, which are still viewed as important references for Chinese medicine today.

Based on these rich historical records, Chinese veterinarians routinely use an integrated approach for pet management, encompassing the advantages of both Western medicine and Chinese medicine. Herbal products for pets are becoming increasingly popular among owners, as more herbal products are readily available in the market, targeting on problems such as parasites, dry itchy skin, reducing gastrointestinal symptoms, infections, and relieving stiff joints or general weakness.
